Smith Cemetery - Southwest Smith County, TX

Gary Baty and Lee Roy Baty in back and Taylor Veenendaal (daughter of Donna Baty Veenendaal) in front. Posed by grave of William Green in Smith Cemetery, south of Tyler, TX. Wm. Green was the oldest brother of Joannah Green Ellison, who was Lee Roy's great-grandmother. Also buried nearby is Joannah's son, Albert Green Ellison.

A Report prepared by Bettye Todd Baty

Smith Cemetery is located on land granted by the State of Texas to Mary M. (Polly) Long in the 1840's. She deeded this land to her son, Richard B. Long, in 1852. He sold the surrounding land in 1881, reserving one acre for the cemetery. To locate the cemetery, drive 2.1 miles south of the intersection of Grande Blvd. and Old Jacksonville Road (FM 2493) in Tyler Texas. Turn east at County Road 164. About one hundred yards on the left is a gate leading to a dirt road onto private land. Drive .6 miles on this road and take a left onto a lane which runs north underneath a large power line. Follow this dirt lane about 200 yards, stopping before the lane starts downhill toward a metal gate. The graves are under huge cedar trees on the east side of the lane. Ice storms and timber crews have destroyed many of the trees in the area, and the cedar trees which originally marked the graves are pretty well ruined. Because of the tree damage, the headstones are hard to find, and even harder to access and read. During the early spring of 2001, Lee Roy and Bettye Baty worked to restore the area. Mr. Baty is the great, great grandson of Jonathan and Anna Weaver Green. The Greens have many blood relatives, relatives by marriage, and lifelong friends buried in Smith Cemetery.

Cemetery books in the Tyler Public Library noted that Smith Cemetery was surveyed in the 1960's. Headstone information listed below is what could be discerned during the Baty's first visit to the cemetery in 1996. At least five headstones listed in the library cemetery books could not be located in 1996, but the library information is included in this report, as are notes on who the deceased were and/or their relation to members of the Green family. Because the cemetery reveals no particular lay-out for the graves, the names have been recorded in alphabetical order. If there seemed to be relatives buried together, the proximity of their graves has been noted.
